WABC Accredited
(Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach)®

WABC Accredited (Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach) global mark is a program accreditation distinction that ensures you’re offering the most comprehensive and robust leader-as-coach training available in the world.

This level is for programs that develop leaders-as-coaches.

Overview

WABC Accredited
(Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach)®

The WABC Accredited global mark is a program accreditation distinction that ensures you’re offering the most comprehensive and robust leader-as-coach training available in the world.

Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach programs develop leaders-as-coaches who represent many professional roles (e.g., leader, manager, supervisor). Such programs focus on developing core coaching skills within the context of a leadership role and are for participants who either have had little or no previous experience with coaching, or who already have some leader-as-coach coaching experience that they now wish to consolidate fully with best practice. We identify practice in this context to be the application of coaching skills, with appropriate recognition of the imbalance of power held by them and individual team members, with the goal of supporting the development and empowerment of others and improving performance in the delivery of strategic business and organizational goals and objectives.

When you successfully complete the WABC Program Accreditation Process, your program receives the prestigious WABC Accredited (Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach) mark.

Your participation in our rigorous program accreditation process engages you in a continuous lifecycle—from initial accreditation to annual monitoring to re-accreditation every three years to ensure you deliver the highest, most relevant training to leaders-as-coaches today and tomorrow.

ELIGIBLE CANDIDATE PROGRAMS

Develop Leaders-as-Coaches

WABC welcomes applications from providers whose programs embrace a range of educational learning and assessment methods

WABC Accredited (Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach) Programs develop leaders-as-coaches and are delivered at a professional level of engagement.

As such, this level of program accreditation is only available to training programs that offer leader-as-coach coaching as the main focus of their curriculum. This means 100% of the learning hours within the program must be focused on the practice, theory and/or research of leader-as-coach coaching.

SHARING OUR PHILOSOPHY

WABC offers program accreditation to acknowledge and reward excellence in training and development in leader-as-coach coaching. Your route to achieve WABC Accredited is via our program accreditation process developed to enhance the confidence of all stakeholders by providing transparent scrutiny of programs against robust and reliable principles and standards.

Accreditation of training provision is a critical benchmarking process for everyone interested in developing sound practice in training and research in leader-as-coach coaching.

The WABC Program Accreditation Process route to achieving these standards and principles is, however, not prescribed, and WABC welcomes applications from providers whose programs embrace a range of educational learning and assessment methods. The principle of equivalence is used to consider their “fitness for purpose” and to determine if they achieve appropriate outcomes consistently.

PROCESS

Your 4 Steps

STEP 1

Ensure Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach is the Right Level

The accreditation level you choose will be based on your program’s focus and level of leader-as-coach development

Let’s ensure Level 1 Leader-as-Coach is right for you:

SHARING WABC INSIGHTS
What our providers have done: To date, all have chosen both Level 1 and Level 2 – Leader-as-Coach accreditations offering them maximum flexibility and responsiveness for their participants, employees and clients.

If you choose to pursue both levels at the same time (the highly favored approach), your time and investment are maximized too – you only need to enroll in one WABC Program Accreditation Process and pay one initial program accreditation fee (you earn two accreditations for the price of one)!

STEP 2

Explore the WABC Program Accreditation Process

Our years of proven experience have shown us that exploring our good mutual fit is essential at this very early stage

PRE-PROCESS – exploring fit

What happens: You’ll contact WABC for an exploratory discussion(s) about your eligibility. If we’re a good mutual fit and you’re ready to proceed, WABC invites you to complete our WABC Applicant Program Overview form* which requests key information about your organization and program offer. Your information is reviewed by the WABC Accreditation & Credentialing Director. The purpose of this form is to help WABC ensure, at the earliest possible stage, that your organization’s program meets the basic eligibility requirements for the WABC Program Accreditation Process for Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach. There is no fee for this review.

*PLEASE NOTE: Given the scope and limits of this basic eligibility review, submission of this form neither guarantees that your program will be suitable for our accreditation process nor guarantees that your program will successfully achieve accreditation if you’re invited to register in our process.
BENEFIT: DELIVERING A VALUE-ADDED, RICHLY SUPPORTED EXPERIENCE

With WABC, program providers can expect a program accreditation process unlike any other in the coaching industry.

In fact, the path to earn the WABC Accredited mark is an important professional and business developmental opportunity in its own right. By design, you will move through our process of progressive stages and steps that enable you to showcase your program offering for evaluation.

Along the way, we provide personalized advisory support and feedback specially tailored for you with the specific purpose of helping you think more critically, creatively and strategically about your program offer, and how to align with WABC’s global evidence-based standards to offer best-in-class training.

STEP 3

Enroll in Your Accreditation Journey

Our robust process rewards excellence and optimizes your program for success – we’re excited to present our process highlights

process STAGE 1 – REGISTRATION & PAYMENT

What happens: You’ll complete our quick WABC Applicant Registration form (available directly from WABC) and pay the appropriate fee. Assuming you still meet the admission requirements, you’ll proceed to the next stage. If not, an appropriate refund is issued.

BENEFIT: ADAPTING TO MATCH YOUR APPROACH

As you progress through the WABC Program Accreditation Process, the program provider’s route to achieving WABC’s standards and principles is not prescribed. We welcome applications from providers who offer courses and programs that embrace a wide range of educational learning and assessment methods.

Our assessment uses equivalence to determine if programs deliver appropriate, consistent outcomes, no matter their approach.

The broader business coaching community benefits from your innovation too—as a provider of a WABC Accredited Program, you’re helping to build the global body of knowledge about leader-as-coach coaching as an evolving, impactful practice.

process STAGE 2 – INTAKE

What happens: You receive your WABC Welcome Package (contains all the resources you need) and the Director matches you with a WABC Adviser. In your first meeting (virtual) with your adviser, you’ll discuss your WABC Applicant Program Overview form, the eligibility of your program, any initial queries you have in relation to preparing and submitting your WABC Self-Assessment Report and target dates for your Report submission. Assuming your journey continues with us*, you’ll receive your WABC Accredited Candidate Package (digital badge and text) enabling you to display the prestigious WABC Accredited Candidate (Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach) mark on your website and other program related materials.

*PLEASE NOTE: Our Pre-Process – Explore Fit stage (Step 2 above) reflects our great care and commitment to ensure, to the best of our ability, a good mutual fit including your capacity and readiness to engage in our process. If during your meeting with your adviser, it’s determined that your program will not meet the standards without major development, you have two options: (1) withdraw and claim an appropriate refund or (2) interrupt your process and hire a consultant to work with you to meet the standards.
BENEFIT: EMBRACING BEST PRACTICES EVERY STEP

WABC continuously aligns with program accreditation best practice in established professional industries around the world, so we can continue to optimize our program accreditation process informed by the most relevant, leading practices offered in the market today. WABC’s proprietary accreditation process includes these key hallmarks of high-quality program accreditation processes:

  • Self-assessment by the provider
  • External review and assessment by independent peers with subject-matter expertise
  • Decision-making by the accrediting institution
  • Monitoring and review of the accredited program
  • Public disclosure and notification by both the accrediting institution and the provider
  • Comprehensive annual review by the accrediting institution to ensure that it stays relevant and continues to set the highest global standards for leader-as-coach training providers.
process STAGE 3 – SELF-ASSESSMENT

What happens: You prepare your near-final WABC Self-Assessment Report for feedback from your adviser. Your adviser reviews the Report and provides written feedback to you on how to further develop it for formal submission. You’ll then have your second meeting (virtual) with your adviser to confirm your understanding of their feedback and explore suitable ways of addressing it. Once you’re satisfied that you’ve addressed the feedback, you’ll send your final WABC Self-Assessment Report to WABC.

BENEFIT: ENHANCING TRANSPARENCY & CONFIDENCE

Our process enhances the confidence of all invested in our industry—leaders-as-coaches, employers, clients, training providers or member of the public—by providing transparent scrutiny of programs against robust, reliable professional principles and standards.

WABC Accredited Programs intentionally offer a blend of professional practice and theoretical elements at every level of the program, although there is proportionally less focus on professional skills development in our higher levels of program accreditation.

Our process allows providers to identify and describe their educational philosophy, and theoretical and professional program underpinnings to demonstrate how they achieve robust and high-quality outcomes for participants, employers and clients alike.

When you engage with a program bearing the WABC Accredited mark, you can be assured that the training delivers the practical skills and outcomes that align with research-based best practice in both leader-as-coach coaching and training alike.

process STAGE 4 – ASSESSMENT EVENT

What happens: You now enter the assessment stage. Your WABC Self-Assessment Report is first evaluated by an individual WABC Assessor* against the specific criteria identified for this level and their findings are then submitted to the WABC Award Board* who evaluates all relevant information and submits its decision to WABC.

*The WABC Assessor and Award Board are appointed by the Director.
BENEFIT: PROVIDING AN INDEPENDENT PROCESS IS PARAMOUNT

The value of the WABC Accredited mark is not just born from the standards that inform it, but also from the evaluative processes that lead to it.

At WABC, we take very seriously the need to accomplish two goals for the benefit of all stakeholders:

  1. To ensure that the WABC standards are best in class and consistently upheld and safeguarded, and
  2. To provide an independent and transparent program accreditation process.

WABC strikes the right balance towards realizing those two distinct goals through the creation of WABC standing committees—the WABC Accreditation & Credentialing Team, and three supporting WABC Accredited Decision Boards: WABC Accredited Assessment Board, WABC Accredited Award Board and WABC Accredited Appeal Board.

The team and boards are comprised of highly skilled experts who are passionate about leader-as-coach coaching and serving our community. They are accountable to strictly uphold WABC’s global evidence-based standards and accreditation best practice.

The purpose of all standing committees is to:

  • Provide an independent, robust and transparent program accreditation process that recognizes excellence in leader-as-coach training, and
  • Promote the highest global standards for leader-as-coach training programs.

Ultimately, WABC maintains oversight of its standards and safeguards the program accreditation process, while simultaneously enabling experts to independently carry out program accreditation related activities. Taken altogether, this thoughtfully considered and balanced-approach raises the quality, credibility and profile of leader-as-coach coaching worldwide to the benefit of all stakeholders.

process STAGE 5 – RATIFICATION BY WABC

What happens: WABC ratifies the decision and then contacts you with next steps including a copy of the WABC Assessment Event Report – capturing the entire assessment process – for full transparency. If you don’t agree with the decision, you have the right to appeal.

BENEFIT: REWARDING EXCELLENCE & ELEVATING YOUR SUCCESS

The WABC Accredited global mark is a distinction that ensures you’re offering the most comprehensive and robust leader-as-coach coaching training available in the world. Fewer than 1% of the world’s leader-as-coach training programs have met our standard of accreditation excellence. As part of this elite group, your mark makes an unparalleled statement to the marketplace about your experience, your dedication and your commitment to quality in advancing the standard of leader-as-coach coaching globally.

STEP 4

Earn WABC Accredited Mark

Your program earns its WABC Accredited (Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach) qualification once you:

  • Successfully complete the WABC Program Accreditation Process (receive a WABC Assessment Event Report “Yes” decision).

To prove your excellence to the world, you’ll receive your personalized WABC Accredited Promo Package (digital package of letter, certificate, badge and personalized verification page (linked to your badge)) enabling you to display the prestigious WABC Accredited (Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach) mark on your website and other program related materials.

POST PROCESS – safeguarding your accreditation

Being the best means renewing relevance and status in our global marketplace

What happens: As a WABC Accredited program, you will safeguard your accreditation by meeting various provider’s responsibilities over the course of your three-year process lifecycle—from initial accreditation through annual monitoring to re-accreditation.

BENEFIT: UNDERGOING CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT

Leader-as-coach coaching is by nature a supportive, disruptive and progressive intervention that must stay current and relevant to real-world business and organizational needs.

WABC’s global standards, the WABC Program Accreditation Process and programs bearing the WABC Accredited mark must adapt to the changing market demands and growing body of knowledge on effective leader-as-coach coaching.

Many program accreditation processes in the marketplace today are poorly designed and deeply flawed—often a mere paper exercise without sufficient, or any, independent scrutiny, subject matter expertise, and ongoing recalibration to evidence-based best practice. Many other accreditations may simply represent a single, limited snapshot in time.

The WABC Program Accreditation Process is rigorous but not onerous. Among the key hallmarks of WABC’s high-quality program accreditation process is that both the provider and WABC undergo continuous review and improvement cycles.

frequently asked questions

Learn Even More

What is accreditation?

Accreditation is a voluntary process by which a nongovernmental body publicly recognizes an institution or program that has successfully met predetermined qualifications through initial and follow-up evaluations.

Is WABC an accrediting body?

Yes! WABC understands the critical need to provide guidelines and principles around best practice to combat accreditation mills, substandard or no academic and quality assurance, and other fraudulent market activity.

With this in mind, WABC continuously monitors other leading accreditation bodies in various established professional fields around the world to ensure its own practices are aligned with the very best and relevant in the marketplace today.

What kind of accreditation does WABC do?

WABC offers program accreditation at many levels for both business coaching and leader-as-coach coaching programs. WABC does not offer institutional accreditation.

What is unique about a program accreditation qualification?

It is the most rigorous level of qualification available to programs by an external accreditor. Program accreditation processes that follow industry best practice ensure their accredited programs require validation, carry re-accreditation requirements and are subject to revocation. WABC Accredited adheres to these best practices.

My program has been accredited by another organization. Is my program still eligible to get WABC Accredited?

WABC program accreditation focuses solely on programs dedicated to developing professional business coaches or leaders-as-coaches, not for programs that offer coaching as one part of the curriculum. This focus makes it different from accreditations offered by other bodies. To be eligible, your leader-as-coach program would need to meet this basic requirement:

  • 100% of the learning hours within the program must be focused on the practice, theory and/or research of leader-as-coach coaching
I am creating a new program that I’d like to get WABC Accredited. When is the best time to enroll in the WABC Program Accreditation Process?

The best time to enroll with us is as early as possible when creating your new program.

SHARING WABC INSIGHTS
What virtually all providers have done: Enroll early on in their program development phase. The reason is simple: Once registered, you can leverage WABC’s rich program accreditation resources to guide your program development. This approach is efficient and avoids the need to make unnecessary changes later.

Some additional guidance:

  • Our process is evaluative. This means you are responsible for developing your own program, and WABC is responsible for assessing your program to ensure it is consistent, substantively and procedurally, with the standards that WABC has identified as required for a training program at the specified level.
  • If you need assistance creating your new program, WABC offers a range of consulting and business services to identify opportunities and improve coaching within organizations. WABC Business Services are independent of our program accreditation process and carry separate fees. Please contact WABC to learn more.
  • You will run your new program as a “pilot” once (with a cohort of 3 – 5 participants) before you complete the WABC Program Accreditation Process.
I understand I need to run a pilot for my new program. What can I give my pilot participants once my program gets WABC Accredited?

For a Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach program, you issue them a “Certificate of Program Completion” once they have successfully completed all your Program requirements (as specified by WABC) within your applicable deadline.

How long does it take to complete the WABC Program Accreditation Process?

At the beginning of your Accreditation Journey, we co-create your personalized time line, including target dates, to ensure you’re in control of what matters to you, while also preserving WABC’s commitment to provide you with a value-added, richly supported experience.

Factors influencing your time line may include:

  • If you have an existing program
  • If you are creating a new program
  • If you need to engage a consultant to assist your program development (e.g., improving your existing program or building a new one)
  • If you have a specific market-driven need to complete the process within a certain period of time

Given WABC’s considered experience in offering this service, we offer providers a generous amount of time based on the level:

  • WABC Accredited (Level 1 – Leader-as-Coach) – have up to 12 months to complete the initial process*
  • WABC Accredited (Level 2 – Leader-as-Coach) – have up to 12 months to complete the initial process*
*Your own time line depends on your needs and program status. For example, if you already have an existing program that does not require significant adjustments to meet our standards and fully engage in our process, you can expect to complete the initial process in a considerably faster time.
My program is not taught in English. Can it still be assessed?

Yes, although you must plan to provide all your reporting requirements and an ongoing working relationship with WABC in English, as WABC and all program accreditation team members operate using English.

If you don’t speak English, please plan accordingly. You must have one member of your team who has an English language qualification and can easily communicate with your adviser in English. Your submission must also be in English.
